This novel, first published in 1927, is not a Miss Silver mystery, but has its own charms. For one thing, the hero is appealing, and a pretty good amateur detective. John Maurice Waveney survives the Great War to lead an adventurous life working for a naturalist who specializes in snakes. Then suddenly he discovers he's become heir to an English estate and the title of baronet. The next thing he discovers is that his cousin Anne Belinda has disappeared. Not even her twin Jenny knows where she is. Or does she? Sir John won't let go when he gets an idea in his head. And he's determined to plumb the mystery of the missing Anne. He remembers her as a teenager, and can't get the image of her out of his mind. Why does her family not seem to care where she is? Why are her friends all hopelessly out of touch with her?The storyline is simple, but engrossing. The truth is hidden beneath layer upon layer of lies. Anne's adventures in London are as amazing as John's adventures in far-flung places crawling through jungles photographing snakes. The puzzle may not be not complex, but it's very emotional. And John's investigation turns into a highly romantic quest. There is a witty quality to John's determination that makes for fun reading. This is a fairly light read, but I enjoyed the book very much.

The Wentwoth books as near as I can determine are all excellent! In her "Miss Silver" mysteries there is always a pretty, vulnerable girl and the handsome man who rescues her along with a good mystery. This book has the girl and the handsome man but there is not so much mystery. However, it does have an interesting and humorous cast of characters which, along with her usual polished writing style, make for an excellent read!

Terrible title but well worth reading for a good story, and for at least three characters: 1) a hero with the most delightful courting maneuvers, 2) a Dickens clone somewhat softened, and 3) a totally original Dickensian character, a true Wentworth invention. Interesting psychology, good pacing. Definitely one of Wentworth's best.

I bought this because of the favorable reviews on Amazon and because when I read the sample pages it sounded interesting. But when I actually read the book I quickly became thoroughly fed up with the everlasting "Oh, I can't tell! It's just too horrible~!" And when I finally got to where the hero finally finds out what the thing is that is just too horrible to tell I was completely disgusted. Frankly, I don't want to waste my life reading about such a bunch of nitwits. I hoped the hero would say, "Thanks. I am glad to have the matter cleared up." and walk away from the heroine, but of course he didn't.Too bad I can't get my money back, but at least I can warn others.

I loved this book! The characters were believable and compelling, and the situation very interesting. The male lead got a little arrogant/pushy at times, but for the most part was more humble and respectful of the woman than you often see in books of this era.
